The baker
Catherine's bakehouse
Braw is an old Scots word for something fine, handsome, excellent. That is the standard for the loaf: a dark blistered crust, a tender crumb, and enough tang to earn its keep on the table all week.
The baker is Catherine - wife to Jeremie, mummy to Theo and Millie, and a keen baker for all of her adult life. She learned from her mum Mary, the family's own Mary Berry, and has been mixing, proving and feeding dough ever since.
This is not a cafe and it is not a supermarket loaf. It is a home bakery, mixed in small batches and delivered the morning it comes out of the oven. Subscriptions keep the rhythm honest - Catherine knows how much dough to mix, you know bread is coming.
The starters
Bertha and Big Bertha
Catherine has been growing her sourdough starter since Christmas 2025. She is affectionately known as Bertha, and she gives birth to every loaf that leaves the house.
Big Bertha is the big jar used for the week's bakes. Both are treated like members of the family - fed, minded and kept lively so the home bakery keeps ticking over.
The taste testers
It started with gifts
Jeremie, Theo and Millie are the in-house taste testers. The whole thing began to grow - like the starter - when Catherine started gifting loaves to friends and family.
Alongside the sourdough there is Catherine's milk loaf - a Warner household favourite - plus Simple Dimples, cookies and cinnamon rolls. They are extras, not the point, but they are made with the same care: butter, time, and no shortcuts that show up in the taste.
We need more people to bake for.
